The Ugly Truth of Ugly Produce
What happens when food waste (ugly produce) is commodified, rebranded and sold to consumers as environmental activism? Fresh produce that would go to food banks to serve the poor is instead turned into a profit. Small and urban farmers risk losing their CSAs – their “lifeline to economic viability.” CSAs are forced to scale back their food justice projects as customers are lost to a hungry startup. The cause of food waste remains untouched.
Read the Ugly Truth of Ugly Produce to uncover the reality of corporate-supported agriculture masked as a social enterprise combating food waste.
This blog was written by the crew at Phat Beets Produce in collaboration with Food First.
Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin Grant Application Period Now Open
Launched in 2008, the Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin (BLBW) competitive grant program is designed to strengthen Wisconsin’s agricultural and food industries by working to reduce the marketing, distribution, and processing hurdles that impede the expansion of sales of Wisconsin’s food products to local purchasers.
